The Secretariat is delighted to invite all member universities to the IAMU webinar on “MET during the COVID-19” jointly organized by the Academic Affairs Committee and Secretariat.
The objectives of the webinar are to exchange the experiences on Maritime Education and Training during the COVID-19 with member universities, and to explore a “New normal in MET”.

The webinar will take place on Wednesday, 13th and Thursday, 14th January 2021 at 11:00 – 13:00 GMT.
The registration is required to join the webinar.
Due to system limitations, maximum number of participants is 500. So, it is recommended for each member university to limit the number of participants around 8-9.

Liverpool John Moores University
Abdul Khalique is the head of LJMU Maritime Centre where he looks after the University’s suite of simulators. Master Mariner by profession, he has been in Maritime Education and Training in the UK since 2003. He has worked in various teaching, management and research roles within a number of training and education establishments within the UK.Gdynia Maritime University
Dariusz Barbucha earned MSc degree in Mathematics at Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry of Gdansk University, Poland, PhD in Computer Science at Faculty of Electrical Engineering of Poznan University of Technology, Poland, and DSc (habilitation) in Computer Science at Faculty of Computing of Poznan University of Technology, Poland. Currently he works as an Associate Professor at Department of Information Systems, Gdynia Maritime University, Poland. His research focuses on combinatorial optimization, computational intelligence, metaheuristics, intelligent transportation systems, and multi-agent systems. He authored and edited several research papers and books. He was a principal investigator and member of the teams of National Science Center and Polish Ministry of Science, Higher Education research projects. He has also a broad experience in development and implementation of various ICT systems, including decision support systems, multi-agent systems, web-based systems, and others. During his work at Gdynia Maritime University, he has held a variety of academic posts as: Deputy Dean for Education of the Faculty of Entrepreneurship and Quality Science (2016-2020), Faculty Coordinator of Erasmus+ Pogramme (2016-2020), and Deputy Rector for Scientific Research of the Gdynia Maritime University (2020-2024).
Maritime Institute Willem Barentsz NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences
Gerrit van Leunen is director of the Maritime Institute Willem Barentsz in the Netherlands, which also includes the national Maritime Simulator Training Center. He joined the institute in 1992 after sailing as a deck officer. He has experience as a simulator instructor and lecturer, in 1999 he became head of studies and since 2007 he has been director of the institute. He is chairman of the national consultative body for maritime courses for higher professional education.
Svendborg International Maritime Academy
Michael Pfeiffer is an Assistant Professor at SIMAC. He is a former student at SIMAC and an experienced Dual Purpose Officer in various vessel types such as Container, Tankers, Offshore-Supply and Passenger Ferries.
As a faculty member at SIMAC, he has been primarily engaged in teaching and various research & development projects. Since 2019 he has been working as Academic Administrator & counsellor for students conducting shore-based work experience and maritime on board training. By having had contact with students before, under and after their training periods he has a good understanding of the challenges that the students face under the COVID-19 pandemic.
Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport
Dr. Capt. Mohi Eldin Mohamed Elsayeh, Dean – College of Maritime Transport & Technology, & Director, the Technical Office for Maritime Transport Affairs, Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT).
Dr. Elsayeh is a Professor of Port Economics and Operation Management. He has previously worked as Merchant marine officer on board various types of vessels. He holds a Ph.D. in Port Economics and Operation Management from the University of Huddersfield – United Kingdom. He earned his Master of Science "MSc" in Maritime Affairs from World Maritime University (WMU) – Malmo – Sweden and has got his Bachelor degree in Nautical Science and Technology, AASTMT. He has participated in a number of academic conferences, research projects, and published research papers in various international journals.
Batumi State Maritime Academy
Nino Kurshubadze has comprehensive education covering Engineer, Technologist and Chemistry directions with the highest level of EQF in Chemistry Sciences (PhD) and 7 year experience in maritime cargo testing qualitative laboratories and implementing international standards for testing materials, calibration and issuing certificates of quality. Above to the testing standards she has experience in implementing company’s intergraded management standards QHSE (Quality, Health, Safety, Environmental) and working with such clients as BP, Chevron, Exxonmobile.Australian Maritime College, University of Tasmania
Dr Prashant Bhaskar is the Director, National Centre for Ports & Shipping at the Australian Maritime College - an Institute of the University of Tasmania. Prashant has had nearly 40 years’ association with the maritime industry - first as a seafarer and then an educator and researcher. Prior to joining the Australian Maritime College in 1993, Prashant worked on a variety of ships and obtained his qualification as Master Mariner. During the past 25 years, Prashant has contributed extensively to human capability development in the maritime industry through education, training and consultancy in seafaring, maritime operations and maritime logistics management fields. As a researcher, Prashant’s primary interest lies in organisational resilience, especially as it relates to organisations in the maritime and logistics industries.
Svendborg International Maritime Academy
Silja Kjaerbo is a Faroese student at SIMAC. She studies to become a marine engineer, she is at her 8th semester out of 9. She is a head of the maritime student selection, where she hosts meetings throughout the year. She has been a head of the selection since january, and therefore she has a good insight in the mindset of the students before and after the COVID-19. Other than that she has also experiened to be a student for over 3 years before the pandemic, and do see how it has effected her, and her future colleauges.
