On Friday, 15 May 2026, IAMU delegates attended the Nippon Foundation presentation on MASS-related projects, held at the IMO Main Hall in London.
The presentation, entitled Fully Autonomous Ship Project “MEGURI2040”, introduced MASS projects supported by The Nippon Foundation, their goals, achievements and future perspective.
The presentations touched on various aspects of future shipping. Among the topics covered, the IAMU delegates found the sections on autonomous berthing and unberthing, sailing in confined waters and heavy traffic, and overtaking operations under different water conditions particularly interesting.
The IAMU delegates noted that these projects highlight a number of issues relevant to the future of maritime education. For this reason, the presentation materials would be valuable for IAMU members in considering future maritime education and training.
