On July 25, 2025, Dalian Maritime University (DMU) hosted a commemorative event to mark the 20th anniversary of the Joint Master of Science in Maritime Affairs (MSEM) Program, delivered in collaboration with the World Maritime University (WMU). Held under the theme “From Challenges to Excellence: Celebrating 20 Years of MSEM,” the event brought together more than 200 participants, including representatives from both institutions, China’s maritime authorities, faculty and students of the MSEM program, and maritime industry professionals.

The opening ceremony featured addresses from Prof. Shan Hongjun, President of DMU; Prof. Maximo Mejia, President of WMU; and Dr. Kitack Lim, former Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), as well as a representative from the first graduating class. Dr. José Matheickal, Director of the Technical Cooperation and Implementation Division at IMO, also conveyed his congratulations via a video message.

In his welcome address, President Shan reflected on the program’s achievements over the past two decades, highlighting that 802 graduates have gone on to make meaningful contributions to the global maritime sector. He emphasized the program’s innovative model which combines international expertise with China’s maritime development needs.

As part of the celebration, Prof. Takeshi Nakazawa, Executive Director of the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU), received the Distinguished Faculty Award in recognition of his longstanding contributions to the MSEM program.

During the Roundtable Dialogue titled “Passion & Dedication: Our Voyage to Excellence”, Prof.Takeshi shared his perspective on the challenges facing maritime education and the importance of inspiring future generations of maritime professionals.

A highlight of the event was the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between DMU and WMU. The agreement reaffirms both institutions’ commitment to advancing cooperation in smart shipping technologies, maritime energy management, and academic exchange, while continuing to cultivate global maritime leadership.
 This milestone event not only celebrated the legacy of the DMU-WMU Joint MSEM Program but also underscored the strength of international collaboration in shaping the future of maritime education.
