The International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU) held a preparatory meeting of the Working Group on the Global Maritime Professional (GMP) Initiative at the World Maritime University (WMU), Malmö, Sweden, on 31 August and 1 September 2026.
The meeting brought together representatives from AMET, UR-FMS, AASTMT, WMU and the IAMU Secretariat to develop a common understanding of the GMP Initiative and discuss its future direction.
The discussions reviewed the work undertaken by the GMP-BoK Review and Revision Committee and the GMP Implementation Working Group, providing an important foundation for the activities of the newly established Working Group on the GMP Initiative.
Particular attention was given to the Terms of Reference (ToR) of the Working Group and the Action Plan for the rest of FY2026 and FY2027. These discussions are intended to provide a structured pathway for taking the GMP Initiative forward.
The Malmö meeting marks an important step towards strengthening coordination, awareness and implementation of the GMP Initiative across the IAMU community.
Through continued collaboration among IAMU members and stakeholders, the initiative aims to contribute to the development of competent, adaptable, ethical and future-ready maritime professionals, equipped to meet the evolving needs of the global maritime industry.
