WG on Peer-Assisted Evaluation Scheme (PAES)

One of the missions of IAMU, as stated in the Basic Agreement, is to develop and support effective MET systems for passing on maritime skills and knowledge to future generations of global seafarers that ensure safety at sea, maritime security and the protection of the environment.
In that respect, in 2014, IAMU supported a development project “Peer-assisted Evaluation Scheme – PAES” aiming to develop the evaluation scheme encompassing goals, standards and measures common to leading MET institutions.
Based on the project outcomes, in 2016 IAMU signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Philippines (PAES-P) and in 2018 with Kenya (PAES-K), covering the following:

  • to provide MET institutions with academic advice and suggestions to improve MET curricula for officers on board as well as postgraduate curricula for shore-based maritime personnel;
  • to organize academic workshops together with academic staff at IAMU member universities and MET institutions for improving teaching methodology and the contents of subjects included in the curricula mentioned above; and
  • to have an opportunity to share and confirm the outcomes of the activities within parties concerned.

Consequently, PAES Workgroup members are responsible for coordinating and operational activities within the scope of each MoU.
