On 25 June 2025, Odesa National Maritime University held a roundtable discussion titled
“Protecting seafarers in high-risk maritime zones: current challenges and global responses”
in honor of the International Day of the Seafarer.

The event gathered faculty members, students, industry representatives, and maritime experts to discuss the growing threats to seafarers in the Black Sea and other conflict-affected waters.

The discussion focused on measures to ensure safety, legal protection, and sustainable career pathways for maritime professionals.

The agenda of the roundtable closely aligned with the ongoing debates within the International Maritime Organization, particularly concerning:

  • increased risks of piracy and armed attacks in conflict zones,
  • the need for stronger cybersecurity protocols for ships and ports,
  • mental health and safety of crews at sea,
  • and the global transition to autonomous shipping and alternative fuels, which requires new safety training frameworks.

Professor Iryna Savelieva, Vice-Rector for Research at ONMU, emphasized:

“The challenges currently addressed at the international level by the IMO demand a proactive response from maritime education.
At ONMU, we are committed to preparing professionals who are equipped to ensure safe navigation, manage risks in unstable environments, and lead innovation in the maritime sector.”

During the event, ONMU faculty members were formally recognized for their dedication to:

  • maintaining educational continuity during wartime conditions,
  • developing flexible learning programs for maritime safety and crisis preparedness,
  • and supporting students through research, mentorship, and applied training.

New initiatives presented at the roundtable included:

  • curriculum modules focused on safety;
  • online courses on digital threats and cyber hygiene in maritime operations;
  • and cooperation with shipping and logistics companies to provide practical internships and upskilling opportunities.

ONMU continues to act as a leading voice in maritime education, resilience, and seafarer advocacy — building strong partnerships across academia, industry, and international organizations.
