It is with great sadness that we write of the passing of Dr. Kiyoshi Hara.

Dr. Hara was one of core founding members of the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU). He was the second Chair of the IAMU from 2002 to 2003. His input and insight with the spirit of collaboration, “Work Together” were indispensable in guiding the early stage of IAMU.

He graduated the Department of Nautical Sciences at the Kobe University of Mercantile Marine in September 1961 and stayed at the university as a research associate. He completed the postgraduate course in the specialization of Ocean Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology in 1968. He also took command of the training ship “Fukae Maru” as the master mariner for two years after being promoted to an associate professor at the university.

His research interests were marine traffic engineering and theoretical analysis of ship maneuvering with outstanding research achievements. He promoted to a full professor in 1983 and took the helm of the university as the President from 1998 to 2003 during which he dedicated to the foundation of IAMU.

We pray from the bottom of our hearts that his soul may rest in peace, and may his spirit of collaboration serve as our guideline for the further development of IAMU.
