In celebration of World Seafarer’s Day, the Faculty of Maritime Studies hosted an insightful guest lecture titled “Digitalization, Smart Shipping, and Autonomous Ships: Technology and Industry Trends.” The event featured Dr. Daehyuk Kim, a Senior Researcher from the Research Institute of Marine Systems Engineering (RIMSE) at Seoul National University (SNU), Republic of Korea.
Bringing a practical, industry-focused perspective, Dr. Kim explored the rapidly evolving landscape of modern maritime technology. The lecture comprehensively covered:
- Autonomous Navigation: The evolution of autonomous systems from initial concepts to real-world vessel applications.
- Practical Integration: The technical and operational challenges of implementing autonomous navigation on active ships.
- Smart Shipping Trends: Current advancements in maritime digitalization, artificial intelligence (AI), decision-support systems, and condition monitoring.
- Sustainability & Digital Twins: The role of digital twin technology in driving energy optimization and decarbonization.
- Risk & Regulation: Navigating complex regulatory frameworks, cybersecurity threats, and the evolving human factor in autonomous shipping.
The event was moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aleksandar Vorkapić, an external associate of the Faculty whose own research focuses on data analytics, intelligent maritime systems, and ship energy system analysis. Following the presentation, Dr. Kim engaged with the audience in a dynamic Q&A session and discussion.
