The IAMU Working Group on Collaboration with the South African International Maritime Institute (SAIMI) organized the Global Maritime Professional Body of Knowledge (GMP-BoK) Implementation Workshop, hosted by SAIMI on 27–28 May 2025 at the Nelson Mandela University Ocean Sciences Campus in Gqeberha.
The workshop aimed to introduce strategies for integrating GMP-BoK tools and principles into Maritime Education and Training (MET) across South African maritime universities.

Over two days, interactive sessions showcased the practical application of GMP-BoK tools in curriculum development. The program offered a strategic framework for navigating the complexities of modern maritime education and brought together core professional competencies—including technical, environmental, and leadership skills—essential to shaping globally competent maritime professionals. The workshop also presented actionable strategies to enhance the quality and relevance of MET and better prepare students to meet evolving industry standards.
The event was attended by key representatives from South African MET institutions and stakeholders, including Nelson Mandela University, Durban University of Technology, Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), University of Zululand, SAIMI, and the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN).
