Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) has officially launched its new Global Centre for Maritime Innovation, with the opening marked by a visit from Mr Mike Kane, the UK’s Minister for Aviation, Maritime and Security. The Minister praised the initiative as “world-leading,” highlighting the university’s significant contributions to maritime education, research, and innovation.
The centre brings together three core pillars — research, education, and knowledge exchange — to foster collaboration between academia, industry, and government. Its work will support critical priorities such as economic growth, decarbonisation, and technological advancement within the maritime sector.
During the launch, the Minister emphasised the centre’s potential to support the development of sustainable fuels and new technologies, especially for hard-to-decarbonise sectors like shipping. This milestone underscores the UK’s commitment to becoming a clean energy superpower and reinforces the Liverpool City Region’s role in global maritime innovation.
