As part of our ongoing efforts to highlight Women in Maritime initiatives, IAMU is pleased to share insights from a recent research report by the Research Unit for Maritime Health and Technology (MHT) at the University of Southern Denmark (affiliated with SIMAC). The report, completed in collaboration with the tanker shipping company Hafnia, examines diversity-crewing and the experiences of women at sea.
Beyond the Bow is a research project that explores the experiences, opportunities, and challenges faced by women in the maritime sector. Through a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods, the project investigates topics such as career development, workplace culture, leadership, inclusion, health, well-being, and retention.
By highlighting both barriers and enabling factors, ‘Beyond the Bow’ seeks to generate evidence that can support a more diverse, inclusive, and sustainable maritime workforce, while contributing to the sector’s ability to attract and retain talent in a period of significant technological and organisational change.
The full report, “Beyond the Bow: Diversity-crewing as the ‘Third D’ in Maritime Megatrends,” is available to download.
