Project partners from India, Turkey and Romania took part in a Biofouling Workshop at LJMU to exchange knowledge and methods on biofouling and antifouling on the 23rd and 24th July 2024.

The visitors from Constanta Maritime University (CMU), Istanbul Technical University (ITU), Ordu University (ODU) and the Academy of Maritime Education and Training of Chennai (AMET) engaged actively with the short talks and discussions on biofouling and antifouling presented by Dr Simone DΓΌrr (LJMU; workshop organiser and project PI), Dr Sheelagh Conlan (LJMU), Dr Martin Sharp (LJMU), Dr Geraldine Reid (LJMU, World Museum Liverpool), Prof Bogdan Hnatiuc (CMU), Prof Yasin Arslanoglu (ITU), Prof Γ–zkan Ugurlu (ODU) and Prof Radhakrishnan Muthezhilan (AMET).

Additional participants in the discussions were Prof Mihaela Hnatiuc (CMU), Prof Cristina Dragomir (CMU), Prof Refik Γ–zyurt (ODU), Dr Onur YΓΌksel (LJMU) and Dr Eddie Blanco Davis (LJMU).

The workshop aimed to inform and develop biofouling knowledge, antifouling field trial approaches and their biofouling assessment. Visiting the laser texturing and biofouling labs, the field site Royal Albert Dock as well as experiencing practical sessions on biofouling identification, adhesion strength of biofouling and using image analysis for assessment provided welcome breaks from the intense discussions and facilitated the 2-way knowledge exchange.

The workshop outcome will be presented at the AGA of the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU) at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in October by the project team, together with the initiation of the team’s IAMU Biofouling Network.
