A Sea of Opportunities, Challenges and Career Paths

On 22 May, on the occasion of the International Day for Women in Maritime — celebrated every year on 18 May at the initiative of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) — the Faculty of Maritime Studies in Rijeka hosted a meeting between students and successful women working in the maritime industry and related institutions.

The participants were welcomed by the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Ana Perić Hadžić, PhD, while the moderator of the event, Dr. Jakov Karmelić, former IMO Goodwill Maritime Ambassador, introduced the guests who currently hold responsible and prominent positions within the maritime sector. 

The participants shared their professional experiences, including Dolores Brenko-Škerjanc, Harbour Master of the Pula Harbour Master’s Office, Marija Zaputović Mavrinac, Member of the Management Board of Jadrolinija, Ivana Jeličić, Chief Officer at Jadrolinija, and Barbara Kosec, Third Officer at Jadrolinija. Through their personal stories, they spoke about the challenges, achievements and experiences that have shaped their careers in the maritime sector. They reflected on their beginnings and important professional milestones, emphasizing that continuous professional development, mentorship and perseverance are essential for success in a profession that is still predominantly male-oriented.

Their experiences demonstrated that a career in maritime brings numerous challenges, but also many opportunities for professional growth and advancement. During the discussion, they highlighted the importance of dedication, responsibility and lifelong learning, encouraging female students to recognize that the maritime sector offers opportunities for women across a wide range of fields and positions.

The Faculty of Maritime Studies in Rijeka proudly continues to serve as a place of support and development for all women wishing to build their future in the maritime sector — not only at sea, but also in science, management and education.
