To mark the Day of the Seafarer 2026Batumi Navigation University (BNU) organized and participated in a series of academic and public events highlighting the vital contribution of seafarers to the global maritime industry.

On 24 June 2026, BNU hosted its X International Scientific Conference, dedicated to the International Day of the Seafarer, under the theme “Sustainable Transport System and Maritime Logistics.” The online conference brought together 133 researchers and experts from 35 universities and academic institutions across 20 countries, who presented 61 scientific papers covering sustainable shipping, maritime logistics, green technologies, maritime education, safety, security, maritime law, and digital transformation.

The conference was officially opened by Mr. Ivane Abashidze, Director of the Maritime Transport Agency of Georgia, together with representatives of international organizations and partner universities, emphasizing the importance of investing in maritime education and supporting the next generation of seafarers.

As part of the national celebrations, BNU students participated in the ceremonial parade held in Batumi, demonstrating their respect and appreciation for the maritime profession.

BNU also joined the official public celebration at Europe Square, where the University organized an interactive space for children and families, offering educational and recreational activities, balloons, ice cream, and entertainment to promote awareness of maritime careers among younger generations.

During the official ceremony, several representatives of Batumi Navigation University received prestigious national awards:

  • Captain Parmen Khvedelidze, Rector of BNU, was honored for his outstanding contribution to the development of the maritime sector and his lifelong professional achievements.
  • Ms. Lali Khvedelidze, Chancellor of BNU, was awarded the Medal of Honor of Georgia for her distinguished service and contribution to the development of the country.
  • Chief Engineer Boris Kvikvinia, Instructor at the BNU International Maritime Training Centre, was recognized for his significant contribution to maritime education and the maritime profession.

To further commemorate the occasion, BNU displayed a Day of the Seafarer banner on the University’s main building throughout the celebration.

Through these activities, Batumi Navigation University reaffirmed its commitment to promoting maritime education, recognizing the invaluable role of seafarers, and strengthening international maritime cooperation.
