Overview:

The Maritime Institute Willem Barentsz (MIWB) consists of the Higher Maritime Academy, providing education for masters and chief engineers FG, the Maritime Simulator Training Centre (MSTC) providing full mission ship simulator training, an own seagoing training vessel and a fully equipped student campus with restaurant and library.

The institute has been accredited by national (Minisrty of Transport, Ministry of Education) and professional authorities (Det Norske Veritas, Nautical Institute) in order to ascertain that a continued high standard of quality is assured.

The Maritime Institute Willem Barentsz celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2000 and can be considered among the most advanced ship's officers training institutes in the world.

MIWB is part of the Noordelijke Hogeschool Leeuwarden (NHL) and as such the largest of the Dutch Maritime Universities of Professional Education and with some 300 students, whereas the national facility MSTC caters annually for some 1000 own students and external trainees from all the other Dutch maritime institutes.

As per academic year 2002/2003 the fulltime BSc course in hydrography commenced at MIWB graduating hydrographic surveyors for the dredging and offshore industry and governmental agencies.

These graduates as well as those from the Maritime Officer training programme, receive a Bachelor of Maritime Operations degree upon completion of the studies.

The Maritime Officer training graduates receive both deck and engineroom operational level CoC's from the Dutch Maritime Administration without further examinations. Upon acquiring seatime and a short refresher course the management level Coc's are awarded without further studies or examinations.
